Reflective practice, growth, and wellbeing
“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” — Rumi

Policy Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to ensure all staff at Trust Children and ReadyStepGrow receive regular supervision and feedback that supports reflective practice, professional growth, and high-quality service delivery.

Policy Statement

Supervision and performance support are essential to maintaining safe, ethical, and values-led practice. All staff are entitled to structured supervision, and all team members are expected to engage in supervision, reflection, and performance review in a way that strengthens both individual wellbeing and service quality.

Policy Details

Supervision

  • Supervision is provided to clinicians, therapy assistants, and administrative staff.
  • Formats may include 1:1 supervision, peer supervision, and group reflection as appropriate.
  • Supervision covers clinical reasoning, case discussion, child safety, documentation, professional wellbeing, and alignment with values.
  • Notes capturing actions and learning points are documented by the supervisor and shared with the supervisee using a shared supervision log.

Performance

  • Performance is reviewed regularly to ensure staff are supported in meeting role expectations.
  • Performance discussions include reflection on strengths, growth areas, and alignment with organisational values.
  • Performance processes must focus on professional development and capacity building, not punitive measures.
  • Where responsibilities are not met, supervisors must provide supportive feedback and structured follow-up.

Team Connection

  • Scheduled meetings and reflective spaces (e.g., First Friday Virtual Lunch) are part of sustaining culture and wellbeing.
  • Staff wellbeing is considered integral to performance.

For detailed requirements on the safe and approved use of AI in supervision and documentation, refer to the [Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy] listed under Related Policies.

Accountability

  • Each staff member is accountable for engaging in supervision and performance review with openness and reflection.
  • Supervisors are accountable for providing consistent, values-led feedback and ensuring supervision covers required areas (clinical, administrative, child safety).
  • Where responsibilities are not met, the matter must be addressed through supervision and reflection, with supportive follow-up to strengthen practice.

How to Raise a Concern

If staff feel they are not receiving adequate supervision or feedback, they must:

  1. Raise the matter with their direct supervisor, where appropriate.
  2. If unresolved, escalate to the Clinical Director.
  3. Document the concern in service records if relevant, using objective and minimal information.
  4. Where concerns impact child safety or confidentiality, escalate immediately under the Child Safety Policy or the Confidentiality & Consent Policy.
